What is new on iOS
According to the App Store release notes, version 57.0 brought a full redesign for iPhone and iPad with light, dark and automatic themes. Subscriptions now sit alongside your saved configs, smart connection groups arrived, and sharing moved from device-ID locks to public-key sharing. Versions 57.1 and 57.2 improved config imports (Trojan, advanced options and WireGuard IPv6), subscription decoding, SSH reliability and error messages. See the full changelog.
Setup on iPhone
- Install the app and open it.
- Import a config from a link, QR code, image, file or the clipboard.
- Tap Connect. iOS shows a prompt asking to add a VPN configuration. Allow it and confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
- When the VPN indicator appears in the status bar, you are connected.
iOS tips
- Use Files or AirDrop for config files. Open the file and choose NPV Tunnel from the share sheet.
- Keep iOS updated. VPN behaviour improves with system updates.
- Switching networks: the app attempts recovery when your network changes, but a brief reconnect is normal.
- Only one VPN at a time. Disable other VPN profiles in Settings → General → VPN & Device Management.
Protocols on iOS
The App Store lists VLESS, VMess, Trojan, Shadowsocks, Hysteria2, WireGuard, SSH, DNSTT, SOCKS and HTTP plus custom Xray JSON. Psiphon mode was removed in version 42.0. Read the protocols guide to pick one.
Sharing configs between your devices
Because sharing is now public-key based, you can send a protected config to your own other device by copying that device's public key from My public key in the More tab. Details in share and lock configs.
On Android instead? Get it on Google Play.
iPhone versus Android: the practical differences
| iPhone / iPad | Android | |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum system | iOS / iPadOS 16.0 | See the Google Play listing |
| VPN permission | Add VPN configuration prompt with Face ID or passcode | System VPN consent dialog |
| Config sharing | Public-key sharing (since 57.0) | Same export screen |
Keeping the connection stable on iOS
- Leave the app installed and allow its VPN profile; removing the profile disconnects you.
- Low Power Mode may reduce background activity. If the tunnel drops while the phone is idle, try turning it off.
- When you move between Wi-Fi and cellular, the app attempts recovery; give it a few seconds.
- If you see odd behaviour after a major iOS update, force close the app and reconnect.
Reading the iOS release notes
The App Store describes recent versions like this: 57.2 updated Xray and improved SSH reliability and error messages, 57.1 improved imports for Trojan and WireGuard IPv6 and tidied subscription decoding, and 57.0 was the redesign with smart groups and public-key sharing. If a Trojan config stopped working after an update, re-import the provider link as suggested in the notes.
Is it free on iOS?
Yes. The listing is free and says it contains advertising; Premium removes ads. There is no hidden server fee because the app does not sell servers.
Frequently asked questions
What iOS version does NPV Tunnel need?
iOS 16.0 or later, and iPadOS 16.0 or later on iPad.
Is the iPhone app the same as the Android app?
They share the same name, features and config format, but each platform has its own interface and release schedule.
Can I move my configs from Android to iPhone?
Yes, if they are not locked to another device. Use a file, QR code, link or public-key sharing.
Why is the iOS app 140 MB?
The app bundles a full tunnel engine (the Xray core and others), which makes it larger than a simple utility.
